The year I was born, 1958, was also the year the US Supreme Court ordered schools in Arkansas (and it follows, the rest of the country) to integrate, sparking civil unrest in the South. As a fifth-grader, my family moved from New York State to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where I witnessed the effects of segregation first-hand.

In 1992 Rodney King, an african american taxi driver, was pulled over and beaten by four white police officers. It was unnecessary and creul. I chose this even because it shows how people were still racest and discrimanate against african americans even though it was many many years after the integration of schools and such.

The year i was born was also the year Hurricane Andrew made his devastating impact in South Florida. I vaguely remember sitting on the floor with my mom playing with my toys, and seeing this on the news.

I think hurricane Andrew hitting southern Florida was a very influential event for the U.S. because it killed many people and cost the U.S. 26.5 million dollars.

I have no idea what went on when I was born, so I’ll go with what everyone else, was saying, which is that Bill Clinton became president. Hooray.
